Hello and welcome to our fourth blog! Today, we want to share why we created our first game, Revival of Heartgrove, and what we envision for Mystwood Games.

Our journey began at Tufts University, where we were graduate students witnessing rising loneliness as the world became increasingly digital. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly contributed to this rise, particularly affecting those aged 25 to 35, with loneliness nearly doubling in those age groups.

Beyond this epidemic, we’re surrounded by gadgets and living in a world marked by global conflicts. We’ve noticed that because of these reasons, many people, including ourselves, are becoming socially starved and actively seeking genuine connections with others.

That is why we wanted to make a game – not any game, but the one we would want to play, as well as our friends and loved ones. That is how we started Mystwood Games. At Mystwood Games, we aim to develop board games that blend strategy and social interaction.

After chatting with many people, from casual players to board game enthusiasts, we found that players want to strategize and plan their moves ahead while enjoying others’ company during the game. However, many strategy games tend to be complex for most of social settings, while social games often lack depth. It’s typically a choice between games like Scythe or Mafia, but we didn’t see a middle ground, so we decided to create it ourselves.

This led us to develop Revival of Heartgrove, a game that combines the social tension of Mafia with the resource-management mechanics of Scythe or Catan, designed for a 90- to 120-minute gameplay session. We aim to create medium complexity game that targets players who have outgrown traditional party games but still seek engaging experiences without long rulebooks.

While Revival of Heartgrove is our first title, we aspire to create more games and expansions and establish ourselves as a genre-defining board game company. Our mission is to encourage more meaningful connections between people, especially as the world trends towards increased digitization and decreased humanization :/

We hope that our games can preserve the essence of human interaction in an ever-more screen-heavy, AI-driven world. If you believe in the same – join us by subscribing to our newsletter below!
